1) Improper pronunciation: That’s it! Just think of reading an article. If you couldn’t pronounce the letters properly, would you continue reading it with interest? Certainly not!

2) Not knowing what it means: If we can’t understand what we’re reading, we feel bored after a while.

Of the above two factors, improper pronunciation creates a huge impact when reading the Holy Quraan, so it’s a must to learn Tajwid & to recite the Holy Quraan as it should be recited. The most popular quranic tajweed book names is yassarnal Quran in english.

What is Tajweed?

Briefly, we can define Tajwid as elocution. Technically we can describe it as the pronunciation of each letter according to its own set of rules.

Necessary or Recommended?

I’ve seen many people considering that it’s not so important to learn tajwid. They think it’s not necessary & that just reciting will bring those rewards. But ayahs & hadiths teach us that learning Tajwid is necessary.

Quraan, saying (what means): “Or add to it, & recite the Quraan with measured recitation.” [Quraan 73:4]

Those, to whom we have given the book, recite it with its true recital . . . [Quraan, 2:121]

So what is its true recital? It is to recite exactly in the way it was revealed, & this ayah shows how Allah (Subhan wa Tala) desires to see His book recited.

Ali ibn Abi Talib (Ra) said in the explanation of this ayah that tarteelan, which means measured recitation, is defined as the Tajwid of the letters & knowing where to stop them correctly.

The Quraan will either testify in your favor or against you. This is quoted from a hadith in Muslim, which means that we all should try to recite the Quraan properly. If we do so, The Quraan will intercede for us on the Day of Judgment. If not, there is no doubt that it will act against us.

When Umm Salamah was asked about the recitation of Prophet (Peace be upon Him), she expressed his recitation as, Clearly distinguished letter by letter . . .

Now what do you say? Is it necessary or recommended?

Tajweed from the Hadith

Rasulullah (ï·º) has said, ‘Indeed Allah desires that the Quran be recited in the manner it was revealed.’ This Hadith clarified by the Aayah and, ‘We revealed the Quran with Tartil.’ (2:32)

The definition of Tarteel has been explained above. Since the Quran emphatically commands us to recite the Quran with Tajweed, it is Fardh to recite the Quran with Tajweed.

Rasulullah (ï·º) has said, ‘The Quran will either testify in your favor or against you.’ Hence, if we fail to observe the requirements of the noble Quran during our recitation, the Quran will testify against us. If we are unacquainted with these prerequisites, we are compelled to acquire the laws of Tajweed.

1) Company of the noble & obedient angels: Ayesha (Radiyallahu Anhu) relates that the prophet (Peace be upon Him) said, The one who recites the Quraan precisely will be in the company of the noble & obedient angels, & as for the one who recites with difficulty, stammering & stumbling through its verses, then he will have twice that reward.” [Bukhari & Muslim]

2) The Best of People: Uthmaan (Radiyallahu Anhu) said that the Prophet (Peace be upon Him) said, The best of you are the ones who learn the Quraan & teach it to others. [Bukhari-Shareef]

3) Ten (10) rewards for each letter: The Prophet (Peace be upon Him) said, Whoever reads a letter from the Book of Allah, he will have a reward & the reward will be multiplied by ten. I am not saying that, ‘Alif’, ‘Laam’, & ‘Meem’ is a letter, rather I am saying that ‘Alif’ is a letter, ‘Laam’ is a letter & ‘Meem’ is a letter. [Tirmizi]

4) Way to Paradise: The Prophet (Peace be upon Him) said, A reader of the Holy Quraan will be called upon on the Day of Judgment: ‘Start reading the Holy Quraan & ascend the (high) stages of the Heaven, & recite slowly as you had been reading in the world, as your abode will be where the last verse of your recitation will end.’ [Abu Daud & Tirmizi]

5) Mental & spiritual peace & satisfaction: Hazrat Bra’a ibn ‘Aazib (Radiyallahu Anhu) states that a person was reading Surah Al-Kahf & his horse were tied near him with two ropes. It so happened that a patch of cloud reached the horse & covered it. The animal began jumping. Next day in the morning the man went to the Holy Prophet (Peace be upon Him) & related the incident to him.
